Team Derby is committed to improving the playing opportunities and performance of all our University's sports teams. Our ambition is to be one of the top 50 universities and colleges competing in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).
Team Derby is introducing a performance sport programme for clubs from Sept 2012 to further enhance the student experience and provide opportunities for athletes to achieve excellence in their sport. A performance support package will be awarded to clubs that have potential to achieve in BUCS competition and help build the University's growing reputation for sport. The programme will provide Performance Clubs with additional benefits to complement the basic support we provide to all our student clubs.
Here at Team Derby we understand that it can be difficult to combine academic studies whilst training for success in the sporting arena, so we aim to provide scholarship and bursary opportunities for talented individuals to achieve excellence in their own sport and support them through their academic studies.
The main aims of the Performance programme are as follows:
To enhance the recruitment of players - from novice to performance level.
To offer improvements in athlete training opportunities and education
To develop a programme that encourages participation and supports performance
To assist improvement in BUCS ranking

The Team Derby Performance Sport programme will work in collaboration with the Derbyshire Institute of Sport and develop close synergies between its services and jointly developing a performance pathway through University.
The Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS) is an exciting new development, inspired by London 2012 and unique to Derbyshire. Its purpose is:
"To provide high quality support to Derbyshire's emerging talented sports performers, enabling them to achieve greater national and international success and in so doing, to enhance the reputaion of Derby and Derbyshire."
The Derbyshire Institute of Sport has been designed to help release this potential, to leave less to chance and to develop a conveyor belt of success in those sports which have a strong base in Derbyshire.
The Derbyshire Institute of Sport is being funded by the University of Derby, Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council.
The resources from DIS will directly;
- Enable more athletes to access high quality strength and conditioning, sports science and sports medicine services within Derbyshire.
- Improve the access of selected performers to high quality coaching, better training and competition facilities and sponsorship and commercial support.
- Improve the performance and raise the profile of successful indiviudal performers and teams throughout Derby and Derbyshire and in so doing enhance the reputation and place of Derby and Derbyshire.
- Support Team Derby in improving the performance levels of selected sports clubs and individuals within the University of Derby and the reputation of the University as which is serious about sport.
